Aluminum Abundance and Aluminum Extrusions
Michalis 'BIG Mike' Kotzakolios
Aluminum is one of those metals that we all take for granted. Aluminum is second only to iron as the most used metal on the face of the earth. However, unlike iron, aluminum can be found anywhere and everywhere. So, it is a common mistake for individuals to think that crafting aluminum is easy and, in particular, aluminum extrusions are not something that are all that difficult to create.
So how does this aluminum stereotype derive? Aluminum is a multipurpose type of metal that is used for a variety of different purposes. Whether it is used for soda cans or for use in making doors or for the venerable softball bat, most are familiar with aluminum’s versatility. And this versatility has allowed aluminum to become a preferred metal in products as consumer demand has allowed for its significant growth.
This does not mean that the process of creating aluminum extrusions simply involve haphazardly molding aluminum into anything that it can be bent, twisted, shaped or torque into. Aluminum extrusions derive from a careful process that requires a tremendous amount of skill on the part of those responsible for said extrusions.
Many times, there is no such thing as a generality to creating extrusions. In actuality, a great many, many aluminum extrusions are custom crafted so as to fit the needs of the person or business requesting/purchasing the extrusion. And, when something is primarily a custom order and not just something that falls off a conveyor belt on a product line, then the skill required to create such an item is generally quite high.
This concept of craftsmanship becomes lost when aluminum is seen everyday in a variety of products and devices. It is simply a fallacy of logic and reasoning when an individual correlates the abundance of aluminum with the craftsmanship required to make the products. This is a faulty “and so it is” method of reasoning. That is, aluminum is abundant and so it is that it does not require any skill to make an aluminum product. This is an insult to those who are involved in creating aluminum extrusions. And it is practically unforgivable.
